Chapter 57

Dalita rejoined them, carrying a glass of white wine.

“I told Suze you knew that girl,” she said to Grady. “Her brother’s a PD dispatcher—he hears stuff. The guy in the security footage went to the police—you know him, Lor. Django Russo.”

“Django?”

“Yeah, but he didn’t do anything. Someone told him he was in that photo and he looked at it and said, ‘Yeah, that’s me.’ Django walked out of Fitzie’s right after that girl did. He said he kept an eye on her—she seemed drunk, and he didn’t recognize her, so he assumed she might get lost. But she seemed to know where she was going, so he just went on home.”

“But no one’s heard from her since then,” broke in Grady.

Dalita shook her head. “She’s only been gone a few days—”

“Seven days! A week.”

“Look who’s counting!” Dalita snapped her fingers. “You getting little bit obsessed with this, yeah? You said yourself you only talked to her for a couple minutes on the plane.”

“And by baggage claim.”

Dalita leaned across the table. “I feel for that girl’s family—they must be going out of their minds. But you’re not her family, Grady. And she can turn up still.”

“And if she doesn’t, her name’ll be up there on that fucking bunker with all the rest,” he said. “So he had an alibi? Your pal Django?”

“He did,” replied Dalita. “His roommate vouched for him—the two played Fortnite till three a.m. The police looked at the website and it all checked out.” Her voice grew gentler. “They searching for her, Grady. But there’s nothing you or either of us can do about it, not unless you know something?”

A sick feeling overcame Grady. For an instant the brilliant afternoon darkened.

“Grady. You okay?”

Dalita was staring at him. He waited for the nausea to fade, but it didn’t. He squeezed his eyes shut, opened them again. “I need to tell you something,” he said.
